This morning I told AvidXchange — the entire Company — that I’m not going to be coming into the office anymore: that I’m giving up my day-to-day operational role.
I told them that next Monday I’m coming in to pack up my office and that, after it’s empty of my stuff, it will become a conference room.
I told them that the company needed a new management structure and that my stepping back and giving way to unified leadership under Mike (my co-founder and CEO) was in the best interest of the Company.
I told them that I’m not a guy who does well in a company growing from 50 to 500 people and, now that the company has 75+ people in it, I’m no longer having any fun. I told them that I am a “0 to 50” guy.
I told them that I’m starting a new software company and that I haven’t been this excited in years.
I told them that each of them has an opportunity to shine now more than ever; that they have a responsibility to maximize their opportunity to grow; that my world is changing and that theirs will, too, and that managing that change is going to be a new kind of challenge, and exciting and exhilarating, and worth coming into work for.
I told them that I appreciated all their hard work, their dedication, and their commitment to our customers.
I told them that AvidXchange was by far the best work experience of my life and that they were mostly the reason why.
I told them I was going to miss them, but it wasn’t until this morning that I realized how much I under-estimated how much I was going to miss them.
And then I cried like a baby.
Crazy. It’s all crazy. And after 11 years, it’s now over.
Life is too short not to pursue your dreams, and mine have always been about creating new things from scratch: things that didn’t exist before, things that people didn’t ask for, things that people don’t yet know they needed.
What’s your dream? I hope you’re chasing it. If not, what’s stopping you? No one is going to chase your dreams for you.
So get on with it already.
